Retirees Embrace the SKI Trend by Spending 50% More on Travel

Retirees are increasingly adopting the "Spending the Kids' Inheritance" mindset, prioritizing once-in-a-lifetime experiences over traditional savings. Data from Squaremouth reveals that travelers over 65 now spend an average of $9,960 per trip, outstripping their younger counterparts by more than 50% as they shift their focus toward global expeditions.

This behavioral shift is defined by a preference for longer, more frequent journeys to distant locales. While younger couples often opt for shorter regional getaways to Mexico or the Caribbean, the over-65 demographic is gravitating toward Europe and remote destinations like Antarctica, Rwanda, and Japan. On average, retirees book their travel 6.5 months in advance—two months earlier than younger travelers—and extend their stays to roughly 15 days.

Financial commitments in these markets highlight a significant gap in spending power and intent. For a trip to Japan, retirees spend an average of $14,275 compared to the $6,353 spent by those under 50, a disparity of over 124%. Similar trends appear in Italy and Greece, where older travelers consistently pay a premium for their bucket-list itineraries. Jackie Mondelli, Chief Marketing Officer at Squaremouth, notes that as these investments grow, travelers must ensure their insurance coverage scales to protect against the risks inherent in high-cost, international expedition travel.
