The new vessels, destined for Stena Line’s route between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn, represent a significant evolution in the E-Flexer series. While the fleet currently spans 17 ships known for their modular versatility, the 2.0 iteration incorporates a diesel-electric propulsion system specifically engineered to house up to 85 MWh of battery capacity. This architecture allows operators to scale their electrical reliance based on evolving regulatory requirements, energy density improvements, and environmental policy mandates.
Beyond pure battery capability, the ships feature modern engines compatible with biodiesel and methanol, providing a bridge to fossil-free transport. Stena RoRo CEO Per Westling emphasized that the design serves as a template for future global ferry routes. The partnership with CMI Weihai, which began in 2016, has proven critical to this strategy, with the yard maintaining a consistent delivery record for the 21 total vessels ordered during the ten-year tenure. Each of the new 214-meter-long ships will accommodate 1,400 passengers and 2,720 lane meters of freight, maintaining the high-capacity standards established by their predecessors.
