Climate Cooling Initiative Pivots Strategy Toward Nature-Based Restoration

The initiative roots its strategy in a new synthesis paper, Cooling Climate Quickly: A New Perspective Yields New Options, which contends that the loss of healthy ecosystems has severely weakened Earth’s natural ability to regulate heat and energy flows. By restoring these living systems, the group aims to move beyond merely slowing warming toward achieving a sustained decline in land and ocean temperatures.

Executive Director Dr. Stuart Cowan and the coalition intend to bridge the gap between scientific research and large-scale implementation. The effort focuses on creating measurable cooling outcomes that can be integrated into existing financial and policy frameworks. Rather than building a centralized bureaucracy, the initiative acts as a connector for established organizations such as the Biomimicry Institute, the Climate Foundation, and WeForest. Jon Schull, a key figure in the project, emphasizes that while emissions reductions remain non-negotiable, the immediate protection of heat-regulating landscapes provides a necessary second front in the effort to stabilize the climate.
