Topdog Secures $2.5 Million to Scale Real-Time Skill Gaming

With $2.5 million in fresh seed funding, New York-based Topdog is looking to pivot the sports gaming market away from asynchronous betting toward live, head-to-head competition. The company, which has now raised $4.1 million total, aims to bridge the gap between casual sports fandom and high-stakes, real-time strategy gaming.

Topdog Secures $2.5 Million to Scale Real-Time Skill Gaming

The funding round, led by Boston Seed Capital with participation from The Raine Group and Bullpen Capital, signals a shift in investor appetite toward interactive sports entertainment. Topdog’s platform distinguishes itself by replacing the traditional house-versus-player model with synchronous, turn-based matches. Co-founder Aman Agarwal argues that existing products fail to capture the attention of fans outside of live sporting windows, a gap the startup intends to fill with titles like Basketball Hustle and 21 Hustle.

Technological infrastructure remains the primary hurdle for multiplayer skill games, specifically regarding matchmaking and fraud prevention. Peter Blacklow of Boston Seed Capital noted that Topdog has successfully addressed the scalability issues that plagued earlier industry attempts, such as WorldWinner. By automating live operations and liquidity, the company plans to accelerate user acquisition and expand its portfolio of strategy-heavy games. The startup is backed by a group of industry veterans, including FanDuel co-founder Nigel Eccles, who are betting that the future of real-money gaming lies in active, player-versus-player engagement rather than passive score comparison.
