Negative-to-Positive Messaging Drives Green Tourism Engagement

A negative-to-positive sequence in sustainability communication proves more persuasive than isolated positive appeals, according to new research from Pusan National University. By anchoring environmental concerns before offering actionable solutions, organizations can sharpen visitor attention and significantly increase the likelihood of pro-environmental behavior in tourism.

Negative-to-Positive Messaging Drives Green Tourism Engagement

The study, published in the Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing, establishes a stage-based emotional processing framework that distinguishes between arousal and valence. Using a 64-channel electroencephalography experiment, researchers found that initial exposure to environmental degradation heightens neural engagement. This heightened attention creates a foundation for a subsequent positive shift when a credible, achievable solution—such as low-carbon travel or marine conservation—is introduced.

While emotional arousal effectively captures attention, the data indicates that valence-based evaluation remains the primary driver of behavioral intent. The findings suggest that tourism entities, including cruise operators and nature-based destinations, should move away from single-message appeals. Instead, they can coordinate communication across the visitor journey, provided the information remains authentic and avoids overwhelming the audience. This strategic progression from problem to solution offers a blueprint for climate and conservation messaging beyond the travel industry.
