Lexeo Therapeutics Licenses Apertura Capsid to Target Friedreich Ataxia

The agreement centers on the use of TfR1 CapX, an intravenously administered capsid that targets human transferrin receptor 1. By leveraging this transport mechanism, Lexeo intends to advance its research beyond current systemic administration methods like LX2006. The collaboration provides a new pathway to reach the central nervous system, addressing the neurological damage caused by the FXN gene mutation, which prevents the proper production of the frataxin protein required for cardiac and mitochondrial health.

Diego Garzón, Chief Business Officer at Apertura, noted that the platform is engineered to unlock more effective approaches for patients facing the progressive muscle coordination loss associated with the disorder. For Lexeo, the integration of this technology offers a less invasive route for therapeutic delivery. The TfR1 CapX platform has already undergone preclinical validation and is currently being evaluated by multiple organizations for its ability to outperform previous capsid generations in CNS delivery efficiency.
