The Hidden Capacity Report, which synthesizes international literature, expert panel guidance, and a survey of 256 healthcare professionals across ten nations, suggests that day surgery should become the default clinical pathway for appropriate procedures. While medical advancements have made same-day interventions increasingly viable, implementation remains fragmented across different regions and clinical teams.

Mr. David Bunting, a Consultant at North Devon District Hospital, notes that the shift is essential for optimizing hospital flow. By moving suitable procedures to day-only settings, hospitals can preserve inpatient beds for patients requiring acute or complex care. The findings indicate that current barriers to adoption are rarely clinical, but rather stem from outdated pathway design and implementation strategies. Fredrik Wallefors, Executive Vice President at Mölnlycke, emphasizes that the report aims to provide healthcare leaders with the evidence needed to build more resilient, patient-centered systems that maximize existing resources.
