The biennial award commemorates the legacy of Halldór Laxness, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1955. It specifically targets authors whose work revitalizes the craft of storytelling, mirroring the standards that defined Laxness’s own career. Tokarczuk joins a distinguished group of previous winners, including Ian McEwan, Elif Shafak, Andrey Kurkov, and Salman Rushdie.

The selection committee, which included Rushdie, journalist Egill Helgason, and festival chair Stella Soffía Jóhannesdóttir, praised the Polish author for her unique command of tone. In a statement delivered at the ceremony, Rushdie described her writing as a masterful blend of tragedy, comedy, and history, calling her one of the world’s greatest living voices. The prize is a collaborative effort between the Reykjavík International Literary Festival, the Icelandic government, and local cultural institutions including the Gljúfrasteinn museum.
