India Faces $75 Billion Oil Bill as Crude Prices Surge

India spent $24.4 billion more on crude oil between April and August than in the previous year, a 48% jump that arrived despite a marginal decline in total import volume. The surge underscores the heavy toll of geopolitical instability on the nation's energy security and fiscal balance.

India Faces $75 Billion Oil Bill as Crude Prices Surge

Official data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell confirms that the import bill reached $74.8 billion for the five-month period. While volumes dipped slightly by 0.4% to 100.7 million metric tons, the sheer escalation in global crude prices rendered the efficiency gains negligible. The primary pressure stems from disrupted flows in the Middle East and heightened shipping risks near the Strait of Hormuz.

Freight rates along the critical route from Ras Tanura to Indian ports have spiked by over 400% since late February. With the Indian basket of crude currently averaging $114.80 per barrel, the financial strain is intensifying. Government projections indicate that September costs will likely climb further as international benchmarks hover near $100, forcing New Delhi to contend with a volatile energy market that shows little sign of immediate cooling.
