Source BioScience and Sectra launch digital pathology network for NHS

The three-year agreement, signed during Sectra’s 2026/2027 fiscal year, aims to alleviate the mounting pressure on reporting consultants. By leveraging the Sectra Image Exchange Portal, Source BioScience can now integrate its histopathology services directly into the workflows of more than 85 NHS trusts. This platform enables laboratories to delegate cases digitally, bypassing the administrative bottlenecks and delays traditionally associated with manual slide transit.

Nick Bills, Healthcare Director at Source BioScience, noted that this integration addresses consultant shortages and reporting backlogs by returning diagnoses straight into the referring organisation’s records. The system is expected to handle up to 60,000 cases in its first year of operation. As pathology subspecialisation grows, the ability to move work across organisational boundaries as easily as within a single lab marks a shift toward a more connected national diagnostic network.
