ETERC Launches AI Mentor to Bridge Engineering Education Gaps

At the National Society for the Study of Education Research Review Seminar in Shanghai, the ETERC research center unveiled Ele, an AI mentor engineered to provide personalized guidance in public schools. Designed to assist in complex subjects like robotics and aerospace, the tool aims to support teachers in underserved communities.

Public school educators often struggle to provide individualized attention when managing dozens of students simultaneously. This burden intensifies in rural areas where access to specialized knowledge in advanced engineering remains sparse. ETERC developed Ele to mitigate these disparities by synthesizing over 12 years of STEM curricula, 5,000 hours of teaching recordings, and extensive lesson plans.

Unlike standard chatbots, Ele focuses on guiding students through the problem-solving process rather than offering direct answers. Founder Wan Jiawei emphasizes that the system acts as a mentor grounded in real-world pedagogy, intended to protect the professional role of the teacher while fostering student autonomy. The software incorporates two new research frameworks: Engineering Becoming Learning Science and Engineering Becoming Theory, which track how students cultivate technical identities and thinking patterns.

Classroom trials have already allowed researchers to refine how the AI identifies student needs and offers differentiated support. ETERC, a nonprofit focused on educational equity, is now seeking corporate partnerships to deploy Ele in underserved districts, inviting collaboration from sectors ranging from semiconductors to aerospace to expand access to high-quality technical instruction.
