Texas and Pennsylvania Dominate U.S. Natural Gas Output

The U.S. reached a total of 47.7 trillion cubic feet in gross natural gas withdrawals during 2025. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, this output relies heavily on massive shale plays including the Permian Basin, the Marcellus Shale, and the Haynesville formation. While Texas maintains a clear lead, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Louisiana follow closely, with the four states combined responsible for 61.3% of the national supply.

Beyond the dominance of Texas, the Appalachian Basin has solidified its role as the country’s second major energy hub. Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio collectively produced 13,377 billion cubic feet, or 28% of the U.S. total. Alaska also remains a significant contributor, producing 3,546 billion cubic feet despite its lack of pipeline access to the Lower 48 states. These figures reflect gross well-stream production before processing, highlighting the sheer scale of domestic energy extraction currently driving the country's position in global markets.
