The Tween Skincare Trend: What Dermatologists Want Parents to Know

Social media influencers and viral "get ready with me" videos have turned skincare into a playground for children as young as seven. While retailers scramble to stock multi-step routines for this demographic, medical professionals warn that most of these products are not only unnecessary but potentially harmful to developing skin.

The Tween Skincare Trend: What Dermatologists Want Parents to Know

The surge in interest among tweens is often driven by curiosity about hormone-related changes, yet it frequently leads children toward potent anti-aging formulas. Dermatologists like Heidi Prather and Natalie Cunningham observe that while it is normal for children to develop skin concerns, the current trend pushes them toward products containing retinol, vitamin C, and harsh exfoliating acids. These ingredients are specifically engineered to address adult issues such as wrinkles and deep sun damage, which are irrelevant for younger skin.

Experts emphasize that a child’s regimen should remain basic: a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer, and consistent sun protection. Using products designed to strip oil or aggressively exfoliate can compromise a child's thinner, more permeable skin barrier. Rather than banning the practice entirely, doctors suggest redirecting children toward a simplified routine that fulfills their desire to participate in self-care without exposing them to unnecessary chemicals. If a child faces persistent acne, undiagnosed eczema, or adverse reactions to products, they should be evaluated by a professional rather than relying on store-bought solutions.
