CNX Expands Radical Transparency to Include Real-Time Radiation Monitoring

Pennsylvania energy producer CNX Resources is broadening its data-sharing partnership with the Shapiro administration, committing to continuous, public disclosure of ambient gamma radiation levels at its well pads. The initiative aims to replace industry speculation with site-specific, third-party verified metrics regarding radiation linked to gas development and waste management.

CNX Expands Radical Transparency to Include Real-Time Radiation Monitoring

The expansion marks a significant shift in the company’s Radical Transparency program, which launched in 2023 to provide 24/7 access to air and water quality data. By integrating continuous gamma radiation monitoring at unconventional well pads and produced water facilities, CNX intends to subject its operations to the same level of independent scrutiny previously applied to air emissions. Onterris, an environmental services firm, will oversee data collection and quality assurance, ensuring that information flows to both the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the public simultaneously.

Beyond ambient monitoring, the company will publish daily radiation survey data for all waste departing its sites. These disclosures, updated monthly, cover the entire lifecycle of development from initial drilling through production. CEO Alan Shepard stated that the goal is to provide policymakers and local communities with empirical evidence rather than relying on the modeling or unverified studies that often define the discourse around natural gas development. These voluntary measures exceed current state and federal regulatory requirements, establishing a new baseline for data accessibility in the Appalachian energy sector.
