La Opinión Marks Centennial by Ceding Its Pages to Angelenos

When Ignacio E. Lozano Sr. launched La Opinión on Mexican Independence Day in 1926, he viewed the newspaper as a vital civic anchor. Today, as the publication celebrates its 100th anniversary, it is honoring that legacy by handing its editorial platform directly to the community it has documented for a century.

La Opinión Marks Centennial by Ceding Its Pages to Angelenos

The initiative, titled Somos L.A. Columna, invites everyday residents—athletes, activists, and local leaders—to author 100-word columns reflecting on the city's evolution. This shift moves the paper beyond traditional journalism, positioning the voices of its readers as the primary record of Los Angeles. Managing Editor Ricardo López Juárez noted that after a century of reporting, the editorial team sought to highlight the personal narratives that define the city's modern identity. These contributions will appear across the paper's print, digital, and social channels.

To mark the milestone, a dedicated digital hub now archives the paper’s history alongside these new community perspectives. The city of Los Angeles has also designated the paper's original 1926 headquarters at 302 N. Los Angeles Street as a significant site for the city's Latino heritage, with a physical marker slated for installation. For Amani Duncan, CEO of parent company My Code, the centennial represents a continuation of the trust established by the Lozano family, ensuring that Angelenos see their own lives reflected with dignity as the publication enters its second century.
