Southern Living Unveils Texas Hill Country Idea House

Nestled just three miles from the heart of Fredericksburg, a new 4,000-square-foot contemporary farmhouse serves as the centerpiece for Southern Living’s 2026 design showcase. Located in the Friedën community, the project aims to mirror the relaxed, rugged elegance synonymous with the Texas landscape.

Designers Jean Liu, Marcus Mohon, and Paloma Contreras led the interior transformation, balancing modern innovation with regional history. The structure features a vaulted white oak living room ceiling and a detached casita that references the area's traditional Sunday houses. The kitchen palette draws directly from the surrounding Hill Country, emphasizing a connection between the home's interior and the Texas terrain.

Public tours of the property run through December 20, with ticket proceeds benefiting the Hunt Preservation Society and the Gillespie County Historical Society. The project was built by Kurk Homes in collaboration with architect Andrew Bray, with support from eleven corporate sponsors including Volvo Cars, Sherwin-Williams, and ADT. Visitors can view the full feature in the October issue of Southern Living, available on newsstands starting September 18.
