Gold and Silver Rally as Markets Brace for Federal Reserve Decision

Spot gold and silver climbed in early U.S. trading Wednesday, finding support as crude oil prices retreated and Treasury-yield pressure eased. Investors are now positioning for the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement at 2 p.m. ET, with markets pricing in a near-certain 25-basis-point interest rate hike.

Gold and Silver Rally as Markets Brace for Federal Reserve Decision

The precious metals recovery arrives despite stronger-than-expected retail data, which showed a 1.2% increase for August. While this figure reinforces the logic for a rate hike, the primary focus for traders remains the guidance provided by Chair Kevin Warsh regarding future policy. A single hike may provide short-term relief, but any signal of an extended tightening cycle could push 10-year Treasury yields back toward the 5% threshold, potentially capping gains for non-yielding assets.

Geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to underpin the market, even as a 7.1 million-barrel build in U.S. crude inventories drove oil prices lower for the session. With Saudi infrastructure offline and ongoing threats to shipping, the defensive bid for gold remains intact. Technically, gold bulls are currently testing resistance at $4,354.00, while silver seeks to reclaim the $65.28 level. The ultimate direction of these metals will depend heavily on the tone of the Fed's updated projections and the subsequent reaction in the dollar and bond markets.
