Japanese Refiners Pivot to Oman Crude Amid Saudi Pipeline Shutdown

Drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline have triggered a scramble among Japanese refiners to secure alternative oil supplies. With the critical route to the Red Sea port of Yanbu shuttered indefinitely, traders are rushing to book Oman crude cargoes to mitigate potential disruptions to their energy imports.

Japanese Refiners Pivot to Oman Crude Amid Saudi Pipeline Shutdown

The 750-mile pipeline serves as a vital bypass for the Strait of Hormuz, allowing the Kingdom to export crude directly to the Red Sea. Saudi officials halted operations as a precaution following the strikes, which originated near the Iraqi-Iranian border. While the government has yet to issue a formal timeline for repairs, regional sources suggest the outage could last up to five weeks. Conversely, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright expressed optimism that the infrastructure could return to service within days.

Uncertainty remains the primary concern for Asian buyers. At least four major refiners in the region report a lack of communication from Saudi suppliers regarding the status of their scheduled Yanbu loadings. While some firms are waiting for updates before diverting shipments, others have already moved to secure Omani barrels to ensure consistent supply. The situation underscores the vulnerability of global energy transit routes and the market's sensitivity to geopolitical volatility in the Middle East.
