GHIT Fund launches digital repository to combat NTD apathy

The initiative addresses the critical reality that progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal of ending NTD epidemics is stalled by a lack of public engagement. Osamu Kunii, CEO of the GHIT Fund, identified societal apathy as a primary obstacle to innovation, noting that medical breakthroughs remain underfunded because the general population cannot advocate for diseases they do not recognize.

Supervised by Professor Kenji Hirayama of Nagasaki University, the platform catalogs the 21 disease groups identified by the World Health Organization. It organizes complex medical data through intuitive frameworks, linking health crises to broader issues such as climate change, sanitation, and the specific vulnerabilities of children. By contextualizing these diseases—including those once endemic to Japan—the fund aims to build the public support necessary to drive R&D investment in vaccines and diagnostics. The GHIT Fund, a partnership between the Japanese government, major pharmaceutical firms, and the Gates Foundation, positions this tool as a resource for students, policymakers, and advocates to move beyond the cycle of poverty and infection.
