Omron Unveils Microsecond Counter to Accelerate Industrial Precision

As manufacturing throughput demands push traditional PLC scan cycles to their limits, Omron Automation Americas has launched the NX-CT High-Speed Counter. The new module allows for microsecond-level edge control, targeting complex industrial processes like high-speed liquid dispensing and laser processing where timing precision directly dictates final product quality.

Omron Unveils Microsecond Counter to Accelerate Industrial Precision

Traditional control architectures often struggle with the latency inherent in standard scan cycles, creating bottlenecks in high-speed production environments. The NX-CT integrates directly into the existing Sysmac automation platform and EtherCAT-based NX architecture, shifting critical counting functions away from the central processor to the machine level.

By executing counter-match outputs within 1 microsecond, the unit eliminates the variability caused by PLC scan times. According to product manager Alex Ocampo, this shift enables machine builders to maintain tighter tolerances during rapid operations. The module also features an integrated advance time setting that compensates for mechanical delays in actuators, such as valves or lasers, ensuring consistent performance even as production speeds ramp up. This development offers a targeted upgrade path for those looking to modernize legacy systems within the Omron ecosystem while reducing overall system complexity.
