NORD Launches Rare Disease Research Career Program for Students

The Rare Research Launchpad provides a free, self-paced curriculum hosted on NORD’s RareEDU platform. By analyzing the trajectories of cystic fibrosis and Krabbe disease, the program offers students a comparative look at therapeutic development. While cystic fibrosis serves as a success story of FDA-approved treatments, Krabbe disease highlights the persistent scientific barriers that define the current landscape of rare disease research.

Developed alongside the NORD Rare Disease Centers of Excellence Network, the series integrates expert-led virtual sessions with a tangible Research Exploration Toolkit. Participants gain direct insights into translational research, mentorship strategies, and the essential collaborations required to move laboratory discoveries into clinical practice. Rebecca Aune, Director of Education Programs at NORD, noted that the initiative is designed to equip students with the specific skills and professional networks necessary to advance science in this field.

For the Rosenau Family Research Foundation, the project represents a strategic investment in human capital. Dr. Gabriel M. Cohn, the foundation’s Executive and Medical Director, emphasized that fostering early interest among aspiring scientists is critical to addressing the thousands of conditions that remain without viable treatments. The platform is built as a scalable model, with plans to incorporate additional case studies and career resources as the program matures.
