Sacramento Waste Management Crew Votes to Join Teamsters

Sixty-nine drivers, mechanics, and welders at Waste Management in Sacramento have voted to join Teamsters Local 150, marking the first time the city's waste collection staff has secured union representation. The successful vote concludes a turbulent campaign defined by aggressive opposition from the North American waste giant.

Sacramento Waste Management Crew Votes to Join Teamsters

The new members, who handle waste collection services across California's capital, faced what workers described as a campaign of forced captive audience meetings and significant spending on anti-union consultants. Francisco Covarrubias, a seven-year veteran at the company, stated that management's tactics ultimately solidified the workers' resolve to seek formal representation. The group now turns its attention to negotiating a first contract aimed at securing standardized treatment and improved workplace conditions.

Dale Wentz, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 150, framed the outcome as a strategic breakthrough for the union in Northern California. With the company reporting $25 billion in revenue last year, the win represents a shift in the labor landscape for the region's waste services sector. Local 150, which currently represents 9,000 members in the area, plans to utilize the strategies developed during this organizing drive to expand its footprint further within the city.
