CPSC Restores Full Quorum With Two New Commissioner Appointments

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regained its full operational quorum this week following the swearing-in of Karen Sessions and Brien Lorenze. The move concludes a period of limited capacity for the agency, which oversees safety standards for thousands of consumer products across the United States.

Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman confirmed the appointments, noting the agency is now prepared to accelerate its enforcement and modernization initiatives. Sessions officially joined the commission on August 19, while Lorenze took his oath on September 8. Feldman credited the appointments to President Trump, signaling a shift toward more aggressive regulatory action in the coming months.

The agency currently faces a significant mandate, as product-related injuries, deaths, and property damage account for over $1 trillion in annual costs to the national economy. With a restored quorum, the commission intends to build upon recent enforcement records, focusing on the removal of hazardous goods from the marketplace and the strict oversight of mandatory and voluntary product recalls.
