Uganda Prepares for 2027 Entry Into Global Oil Market

Uganda is set to join the ranks of crude oil exporters by early 2027, leveraging the nearly finished East African Crude Oil Pipeline to transport production from the Albertine Graben to international markets. The landlocked nation has officially appointed global trader Vitol to manage the distribution of its new Pearl Sweet crude.

Uganda Prepares for 2027 Entry Into Global Oil Market

Energy Minister Monica Musenero Masanza introduced the Pearl Sweet brand to industry leaders at the APPEC 2026 conference, highlighting its low 0.12% sulfur content. The product originates from the Tilenga and Kingfisher fields, which are operated by France’s TotalEnergies and China’s CNOOC. These projects serve as the foundation for a national output expected to reach approximately 200,000 barrels per day at peak production.

The logistical centerpiece of this expansion is the $5 billion East African Crude Oil Pipeline. Stretching 1,443 kilometers from the Albertine Rift Basin to the Tanzanian port of Tanga, the infrastructure is now more than 90% complete. Designed with a baseline capacity of 216,000 barrels per day, the pipeline is engineered to accommodate a future ramp-up to 246,000 barrels, providing the necessary conduit for Uganda to bypass geographical barriers and reach global refineries.
