The new system utilizes a fixed proton beam combined with a 360-degree patient-positioning platform and integrated CT imaging. This configuration allows clinicians to image, align, and treat patients in a single upright orientation. Because the technology eliminates the need for a massive rotating gantry, the equipment can be installed within existing hospital buildings, offering a space-efficient alternative to conventional radiotherapy facilities that typically require extensive new construction.
Proton therapy offers distinct advantages for treating complex tumors near critical organs, such as the brain, spinal cord, and lungs. Unlike standard X-ray radiation, which releases energy throughout the path of the beam, protons deliver the bulk of their dose directly to the tumor site. This reduces damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Furthermore, the upright position provides a more accessible option for patients who experience anxiety or physical discomfort when lying flat for extended periods.
Dr. Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, Managing Director and CEO of Fortis Healthcare, noted that the move addresses a critical need for advanced oncology infrastructure in India. The project remains subject to final regulatory approvals and site preparation. Once operational, the system will be supported by RaySearch Laboratories’ RayStation software, which facilitates advanced treatment planning, further cementing the Fortis Cancer Institute’s role in providing specialized, multidisciplinary care.
