Epicyt Pharma Advances Calcium Therapy After Gastric Bypass Success

Patients struggling with calcium absorption after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery may soon have a new therapeutic option, as Gothenburg-based Epicyt Pharma reports positive Phase 1/2a results for its oral drug candidate, BAFA. The treatment showed a significant reduction in urinary calcium excretion, signaling improved intestinal uptake and better metabolic homeostasis.

Current medical standards for post-bypass patients rely heavily on calcium and vitamin D supplements, yet these often fail to prevent secondary hyperparathyroidism or bone density loss. BAFA, a first-in-class compound combining bile acid and a short-chain fatty acid, offers a different mechanism by actively enhancing the body’s natural ability to process calcium. Dr. Ville Wallenius, the study’s principal investigator, noted that the drug produced coherent biological effects in a proof-of-concept setting, moving beyond simple supplementation toward systemic balance.

With approximately 3.5 million people in the U.S. and EU suffering from impaired calcium homeostasis following bariatric procedures, the clinical need is substantial. Epicyt Pharma is now preparing to transition the candidate into Phase 2b development to further validate these findings. The company holds global rights to the treatment, which targets an often overlooked driver of metabolic bone disease in the growing population of bariatric surgery patients.
