In Pakistan, where motorbikes account for roughly 80 per cent of all road traffic, the market is undergoing a rapid transformation. Sales of electric two-wheelers surged by 173 per cent during the first half of the year, supported by government subsidies and a influx of models from 84 different manufacturers. While initial purchase prices for electric bikes remain higher than their combustion-engine counterparts, the long-term reliability and lower cost of electricity are proving decisive for budget-conscious commuters.

Vietnam is witnessing a similar trajectory, bolstered by Hanoi’s recent implementation of low-emission zones that restrict gasoline vehicles on weekends. VinFast reported a record-breaking first quarter in 2026, delivering 143,136 electric units—a 219 per cent increase over the previous year. Honda is now moving to capitalize on this shift, with plans to begin local production of its UC3 model in the Phu Tho province.

Technological innovation is overcoming traditional barriers like limited charging infrastructure. Chinese manufacturer TAILG has partnered with Kofa in Ghana to launch the TK90, a model featuring swappable lithium batteries that cuts operating costs by 30 per cent. The company is also experimenting with solar-powered battery swap cabinets across Africa, aiming to bypass the need for centralized power grids. These developments suggest that the surge in two-wheeler electrification is not merely a temporary reaction to fuel volatility, but a structural change in how urban populations navigate daily life.
