Jay Bowen, a retired Army chief warrant officer who spent two decades maintaining missile defense systems, was elected national commander of The American Legion during the organization's 107th convention in Louisville. He now assumes leadership of the world’s largest veterans group, pledging to focus on community engagement and suicide prevention.

Bowen’s military career included service in Operation Desert Shield, where he specialized in radar and missile maintenance for HAWK and Patriot systems. After transitioning to the private sector, he held roles in telecommunications engineering and distribution management, notably developing preventive maintenance programs for Bush Brothers & Company. He holds degrees from Southern Arkansas University and Webster University.

His path to the national commandership follows years of internal service. A member of Post 209 in Colorado Springs, he previously served as commander of the Department of Colorado and chaired several key national committees, including the Veterans Employment and Education Commission. Under his new tenure, Bowen plans to implement his "Be Part of the Solution" initiative, which challenges members to take active roles in local community support and legislative advocacy while continuing the organization's push to curb veteran suicide.
