Ohio Governor Mike DeWine Honored for State Student Vision Initiative

The award recognizes DeWine’s role in securing $25 million in funding through the Rural Health Transformation Fund to establish a sustainable system of eye care. In 2024, he formed the Children's Vision Strike Force, which ensures that students who fail standard vision screenings receive necessary follow-up exams and glasses. The program has already delivered comprehensive eye exams to 1,900 children, with 1,200 receiving free eyewear in its first year alone.

Currently operating in 15 counties, including Cuyahoga and Franklin, the program utilizes mobile vision vans and temporary clinics to reach students directly at their schools. DeWine noted that the initiative addresses a significant gap in care, where many children previously lacked access to follow-up services. The formal recognition ceremony is scheduled for September 11, 2026, during a virtual event hosted by the National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health.
