BIGO Ads Challenges Siloed Mobile App Growth Strategies

“A cheaper install is not necessarily a better user, and a higher eCPM is not necessarily a healthier business,” says David Ruggiero of BIGO Ads. The platform argues that developers must abandon fragmented metrics like cost-per-install in favor of a holistic view of the user journey to ensure sustainable long-term value.

BIGO Ads Challenges Siloed Mobile App Growth Strategies

Mobile app growth often suffers from an internal disconnect where user acquisition teams chase low install costs while monetization units push for immediate ad revenue. BIGO Ads, a deep learning-based platform under JOYY Inc., warns that optimizing for these individual metrics can undermine overall business efficiency. A low-cost user who churns quickly is rarely a better investment than a more expensive user who demonstrates long-term engagement.

Developers should shift their focus toward a unified view of player value that incorporates retention, payback periods, and long-term margins. This approach is particularly critical in Europe, where evolving privacy regulations have complicated the acquisition of granular user-level data. Paid advertising, while a powerful tool for scaling, cannot compensate for poor product fundamentals or immature monetization models. By integrating acquisition data with in-app purchase and subscription performance, companies can move beyond surface-level dashboards and make growth decisions that reflect the actual health of their user base.
