Black Pastors Plan DNC Protest Against Centrist Economic Strategy

The Substance Over Symbolism rally aims to reclaim the economic platform of the Civil Rights Movement, which organizers view as the historical foundation for modern progressive policy. Dr. Coates, senior pastor of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church, and Dr. Francois, representing the Fountain Baptist Church, contend that the Democratic establishment’s dismissal of populist goals—such as a federal job guarantee, universal healthcare, and tuition-free college—ignores the long-standing demands of Black voters. By targeting both the DNC and Third Way, the coalition intends to dismantle the narrative that these policies lack support within the Black community.

The demonstration will span two locations in Washington, D.C., beginning at the DNC headquarters on South Capitol Street before moving to the offices of Third Way. For the organizers, this is an attempt to pivot from symbolic political gestures toward concrete legislative action. They maintain that the current resistance to progressive economic reform is a betrayal of the movement that once powered the campaigns of Rev. Jesse Jackson. With this mobilization, the Black Church Center for Justice & Equality seeks to force a public reckoning over the party's ideological direction ahead of the 2028 cycle.
