Soka University Boosts Tuition Aid for Families Earning $200,000

Soka University of America is dramatically increasing its financial aid reach, shifting its full-tuition threshold from $90,000 to $200,000 annually. Starting in the 2027-2028 academic year, the expanded Soka Opportunity Plan aims to remove cost barriers for middle-income families while maintaining automatic merit scholarships for every admitted undergraduate student.

The university’s new tiered structure offers clearer predictability for prospective applicants. Families earning $200,001 to $250,000 now receive 50% tuition coverage, while those in the $250,001 to $300,000 bracket are guaranteed 25%. This policy replaces a previous, less structured approach to partial aid, ensuring fixed coverage levels based on household income. President Edward Feasel stated the initiative reinforces the institution’s mission to educate global citizens by prioritizing access alongside affordability.

To bridge the gap between existing federal and state grants and the university’s new guarantees, Soka will provide supplemental Middle-Income Grants. Eligibility is determined automatically during the standard financial aid application process, requiring no separate forms. The policy covers both incoming students and those already enrolled at the Aliso Viejo campus. With roughly 480 undergraduates currently on campus, the move is designed to stabilize the financial planning process for families navigating the rising costs of private liberal arts education.
