Gold slips as market braces for potential Fed rate hike

Gold prices hit $4,325.50 an ounce Tuesday, sliding past key technical levels identified by market strategists. With Treasury yields climbing and geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz driving oil prices higher, the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in mid-September has surged to nearly 70 percent.

Gold slips as market braces for potential Fed rate hike

Phil Streible, chief market strategist at Blue Line Futures, had flagged $4,350 as a critical threshold for gold bulls. While the metal dipped below this mark during Tuesday's session, Streible maintains that the long-term trend remains intact, viewing the current decline as a correction following a significant $600 run. He points to the August 18th low of approximately $4,378 as the ultimate line in the sand; a sustained close below this level could trigger a more aggressive sell-off toward $4,000.

Market volatility is currently dictated by rising bond yields and energy costs rather than gold’s intrinsic value. The 30-year Treasury yield is hovering near 5.28 percent, reflecting growing anxiety over inflation and policy responses. Streible argues that the Federal Reserve faces a potential policy error if it opts for rate hikes to combat supply-side shocks, such as new tariffs and energy disruptions. He suggests the current flattening of the yield curve serves as a warning that the central bank may be acting too early, a move that would likely necessitate future rate cuts and ultimately provide a catalyst for gold to regain its footing.
