The patent, issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on March 3, 2026, outlines the use of AAV8 and AAV9 vectors administered intranasally. By enabling cells to produce the Klotho protein internally, the therapy aims to mitigate conditions like dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Unlike traditional treatments that target symptoms after they manifest, this approach focuses on the underlying mechanisms of neurological decay.

CEO Elizabeth Parrish identified Klotho as a focal point for healthy aging research. BioViva is currently seeking similar patent protections in the European Union and China to broaden its international reach. While the issuance bolsters the firm's intellectual property portfolio, the company maintains that the development remains subject to ongoing regulatory requirements and clinical validation before any therapeutic application reaches the market.
