China’s Solar Capacity Surpasses Coal for the First Time

The National Energy Administration confirmed that solar now accounts for 31.5% of China’s total installed power capacity. This development follows a steady climb throughout the year, with solar capacity standing at 1,274 gigawatts in June, trailing coal by a mere single gigawatt. Beyond capacity figures, the influence of coal in actual electricity output dropped below 50% for the first time on record during the first half of 2026, settling at an average of 49.7%.

Renewable energy generation grew by approximately 9% compared to the previous year, with wind and solar now contributing nearly 25% of the total power output. Despite this transition, coal remains a critical pillar for industrial operations and grid stability. The rapid expansion of renewables has recently encountered friction, including policy shifts, grid infrastructure constraints, and rising curtailment rates for wind and solar projects.
