Restored Fayetteville School Becomes New River Gorge Boutique Hotel

Fayetteville has officially gained a new landmark with the opening of Hill Hall Hotel, a 40-room boutique property housed within the town’s meticulously restored 1923 stone high school and midcentury middle school campus, located just steps from the New River Gorge National Park.

The project, developed by Mountain Shore Properties, transforms the historic academic buildings into a gathering space that balances preserved architecture with residential interiors. By repurposing the original school layouts, the hotel offers rooms with unique configurations, ranging from standard kings to expansive suites. The property joins the Design Hotels portfolio, marking a significant addition to the local hospitality scene.

At the heart of the hotel is Patsy’s, a signature restaurant led by executive chef Jeffrey Toth. The menu draws on Appalachian culinary traditions and the family recipes of developer Stephen Wendell’s grandmother. Beyond the dining room, the campus features a 24-hour guest pantry and common areas decorated with curated local art, including a large-scale mural by Nichole Westfall. To foster deeper engagement with the region, the hotel has established partnerships with local outfitters for climbing, cycling, and paddleboarding, encouraging guests to extend their stays and explore the surrounding landscape.
