Bio-Techne Secures SBTi Validation for Climate Targets

A 49% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions marks a pivotal shift for Minneapolis-based Bio-Techne. The life sciences firm has now secured official validation from the Science Based Targets initiative, cementing a roadmap to cut absolute emissions by 70% by the end of fiscal year 2031.

The company’s sustainability push hinges on a dual-track strategy targeting internal operations and supply chain accountability. Alongside the primary emission cuts, Bio-Techne has committed to ensuring that 81% of its suppliers by spend adopt science-based targets by 2030. This initiative covers a broad spectrum of external partners, including those involved in capital goods, upstream distribution, and business travel.

Operational changes are already visible on the ground. By transitioning the Minneapolis headquarters to 100% renewable electricity and integrating similar power sources at its St. Paul GMP facility, the company has pushed its global renewable electricity usage to 51%. Kim Kelderman, President and Chief Executive Officer, noted that these benchmarks serve as an independent verification of the firm’s commitment to responsible growth. The completion of a comprehensive Scope 3 inventory further positions the company to address the carbon footprint inherent in its global value chain, which supports over 500,000 products used by researchers and diagnostic laboratories worldwide.
