Medtronic bets $700 million on Cornerstone Robotics partnership

The partnership creates a dual-platform strategy designed to capture a broader segment of the global surgical market, where robotic adoption remains in the single digits. By pairing the Hugo system—which has expanded to 35 countries and is currently seeing procedure growth double that of the wider market—with the Sentire system, Medtronic aims to offer health systems greater flexibility in clinical and economic options.

Expanding the Surgical Ecosystem

Sentire, which earned its CE Mark in May 2026, features a dual-console architecture that allows it to integrate seamlessly into Medtronic’s existing digital ecosystem. The system is already approved for use in China and Singapore, targeting general, gynecologic, thoracic, and urologic procedures. Matt Anderson, president of Medtronic’s Surgical business, noted that the move addresses the varying preferences of hospitals that require different technological footprints. Medtronic expects to exceed 50,000 total global procedures with its robotic portfolio by the end of the fiscal year, with ongoing software and AI enhancements planned for the Hugo platform to maintain that momentum.
