Novo Nordisk brings Wegovy pill to German market

Germany has become the first European Union nation to receive Novo Nordisk’s oral weight-loss treatment, Wegovy. The launch marks a critical expansion for the Danish pharmaceutical giant as it fights to maintain its lead in a global obesity-drug market projected to exceed $100 billion in annual value by 2030.

Novo Nordisk brings Wegovy pill to German market

The pill, which utilizes the same semaglutide active ingredient found in the company’s blockbuster injections, arrives in Germany following regulatory approval from the European Commission in July. Pricing for the oral version is expected to mirror the existing Wegovy pen, with pharmacy retail costs ranging between €170 and €280 depending on the prescribed dosage. This strategic rollout follows earlier introductions in the United States, Britain, and the United Arab Emirates.

Novo Nordisk faces mounting pressure from U.S. competitor Eli Lilly, whose rival product, Foundayo, is currently under regulatory review across more than 40 markets. While Lilly’s drug has gained traction since its April launch in the U.S., Novo Nordisk claims its oral treatment currently commands 90% of the obesity pill market. Industry projections suggest that oral formulations could account for more than one-third of all GLP-1 drug usage by the end of the decade, making this European expansion a vital test for the company’s long-term market dominance.
