The disconnect between technology spend and operational clarity is widening. While 72.5% of organizations plan to increase their data management investments, Info-Tech’s research indicates that these companies often mistake technical implementation for actual governance. By jumping straight to catalogs and quality documentation, leadership teams frequently ignore the harder work of determining who holds decision-making authority and which trade-offs are acceptable.
Nysa Zaran, research director at Info-Tech, emphasizes that tools lack the capacity to define what 'trusted' data means for a business. Instead, the firm advocates for a four-phase transition that shifts focus from management mechanisms to decision frameworks. This methodology forces organizations to identify critical governance drivers, align roles with existing structures, and codify outcomes into organizational guardrails. Without this, firms risk oversimplifying ownership and failing to resolve the core risks tied to data use.
