Hyosung Launches Billion-Dollar Bio-Spandex Hub in Vietnam

Under the direction of Chairman Hyun-Joon Cho, Hyosung TNC has inaugurated an integrated bio-spandex production system in Vietnam. Backed by a $1 billion investment, the facility transitions the manufacturing process from fossil-fuel reliance to sugarcane-derived raw materials, aiming to reshape the global market for sustainable high-performance textiles.

Hyosung Launches Billion-Dollar Bio-Spandex Hub in Vietnam

The company has officially commenced operations at its 50,000-ton-per-year Bio-BDO plant in Ho Chi Minh City. By creating a closed-loop system, Hyosung now manages the entire production chain—from fermenting sugarcane sugars into Bio-BDO to manufacturing PTMG and final 'regen Bio' spandex fibers at its Dong Nai site. This vertical integration secures supply chain stability and allows for an eventual capacity expansion to 200,000 tons annually.

Traditional spandex production relies heavily on coal-based petrochemicals, but Hyosung’s new process leverages renewable sources verified through the VIVE Sustainable Program. Beyond spandex, the facility is designed to supply bio-based materials for automotive interiors, footwear, and biodegradable resins. This strategic pivot positions Hyosung to meet strict climate and ESG requirements from international fashion brands in the United States and Europe, ensuring their bio-spandex maintains the durability and elasticity of conventional synthetic fibers.
