Swampscott Fire Station Reports 43% Drop in Rodent Activity

The initiative began in September 2025 after the facility struggled with persistent infestations linked to refuse collection and landscaping. To overhaul the site, the town replaced standard plastic trash containers with secure metal dumpsters, effectively cutting off the primary food sources that sustained the local rat population. This environmental cleanup was paired with the deployment of 20 bait stations containing Evolve® Rat around the perimeter.

Unlike conventional rodenticides that attempt to kill current populations, the contraceptive approach focuses on suppressing reproduction to prevent future surges. Deb Newman, president of the local advocacy group Speak Up For Animals, noted that the success of the program has already prompted discussions about expanding the strategy to other areas of the community. The project underscores a shifting trend in municipal pest management, where cities—including Chicago—are increasingly questioning the efficacy of poison-only programs that fail to address the underlying conditions that allow rodents to thrive.
