Gold retreats as Fed’s hawkish turn rattles markets

Gold prices tumbled to $4,445.45 per ounce on Friday after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh signaled a potential September rate hike during his Jackson Hole address. The hawkish rhetoric abruptly halted a week-long rally, leaving investors to recalibrate their outlook ahead of critical U.S. employment data.

The precious metal initially showed resilience, hitting a weekly high of $4,697.66 on Tuesday as traders weighed Treasury buyback news and cooling consumer confidence. Momentum shifted mid-week when firmer yields and a stronger dollar began to erode the appeal of non-yielding assets, with Warsh’s comments providing the final catalyst for a sell-off that erased over 1% of value in hours.

Market sentiment remains divided. The latest Kitco News Weekly Gold Survey shows that while 48% of Wall Street experts anticipate a recovery, Main Street investors have grown more cautious. Analysts such as Marc Chandler of Bannockburn Global Forex suggest the metal may face further downside pressure, eyeing a potential break toward $4,440. Conversely, proponents like Rich Checkan of Asset Strategies International maintain that long-term inflationary pressures from high debt servicing costs ensure that any dips remain buying opportunities.

Attention now pivots to the labor market, with the upcoming August Nonfarm Payrolls report serving as a potential turning point. While technical analysts like Alex Kuptsikevich view the recent slide as a necessary correction to alleviate overbought conditions, the path forward remains dependent on whether the Federal Reserve sustains its restrictive posture through the end of the year.
