Supertanker Fire in Strait of Hormuz Stirs Oil Market Volatility

Two naval mines struck a supertanker in the southern Strait of Hormuz on Monday, triggering a blaze and escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed the vessel was attempting an illegal transit, warning that any ship violating their security protocols would face similar consequences.

The incident occurred off the coast of Oman, a route frequently used by tankers to bypass the northern corridor controlled by Iranian authorities. This latest confrontation follows a weekend of direct military engagement, during which U.S. forces destroyed two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island. U.S. Central Command stated the strike targeted minelaying equipment that posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic.

Energy markets reacted sharply to the news, as Brent Crude climbed 3% to reach $90.72 per barrel, while WTI Crude rose 2.8% to surpass the $85 threshold. These hostilities threaten to disrupt the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf, forcing shippers to reconsider routes through the critical waterway. Despite reports of increased output leaving the region in recent weeks, the renewed risk of conflict is creating significant uncertainty for global supply chains.
