Barclays pivots to dual Fed rate hike forecast following Warsh remarks

Kevin Warsh’s address at the Jackson Hole symposium has triggered a major shift in market expectations, with Barclays now forecasting two additional 25-basis-point interest rate hikes before year-end. The brokerage previously anticipated that the Federal Reserve would maintain current rates throughout the remainder of 2024, citing a newfound hawkish tone.

Barclays pivots to dual Fed rate hike forecast following Warsh remarks

Warsh signaled that policymakers face unfinished business regarding the central bank’s 2% inflation mandate. By characterizing current financial conditions as insufficiently restrictive and noting that the labor market remains at full employment, he underscored that price stability holds priority over other economic indicators. Barclays analysts described the commentary as notably hawkish, interpreting his remarks as an implicit argument for tightening despite his historical aversion to explicit forward guidance.

While the brokerage expects upcoming monthly inflation data to soften, it warns that unfavorable base effects will likely obscure progress through December. Investors have responded swiftly to the messaging; CME Group’s FedWatch tool currently indicates a 60.4% probability of a rate hike this September. Market participants are now closely monitoring the upcoming policy decision scheduled for September 16 for further confirmation on the trajectory of borrowing costs.
