Gold Stumbles as Fed Signals Hawkish Turn

Gold’s five-week winning streak hit a sharp reversal on Friday, with prices sliding to $4,473.80 an ounce. The retreat followed a hawkish address by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium, where he signaled that curbing inflation remains the central bank’s primary and non-negotiable mandate.

Gold Stumbles as Fed Signals Hawkish Turn

The sudden selloff, a 2.74% drop in a single session, has forced traders to recalibrate their expectations for interest rate policy. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the probability of a rate hike in September has climbed to 55%, up from 40% before Warsh’s remarks. While the immediate reaction was defensive, many analysts argue the broader bull case for bullion remains intact, anchored by the reality of a U.S. national debt load now exceeding $40 trillion.

Market observers view the pullback as a necessary correction for an asset that had become overextended after gaining roughly 10% in August alone. David Morrison of Trade Nation noted that while the price action might rattle short-term buyers, it serves to shake out weaker hands and potentially establish a firmer base for future gains. Others, like Simon-Peter Massabni of XS.com, suggest the structural drivers—fiscal risks, massive debt, and economic uncertainty—far outweigh the impact of a single policy speech. Investors are now turning their attention to upcoming labor data, which could provide the catalyst for the Fed to soften its stance should employment figures continue to weaken.
