The debris flow descended from the Nepalese side at a staggering speed of 50 meters per second, scouring loose glacial material before slamming into the Gyirong Port facilities in Xizang. According to Guo Zhaocheng of the China Aero Geophysical Survey and Remote Sensing Center, the flow maintained enough momentum to devastate areas more than 20 kilometers from the initial collapse site. Experts warn that the extreme velocity of such ice-rock avalanches leaves virtually no window for evacuation in regions where monitoring infrastructure remains sparse.
Climate change is increasingly destabilizing the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where average temperatures have risen by 0.37 C per decade since 1961. Du Jun of the Xizang regional meteorological bureau notes that shrinking glaciers and degrading permafrost are creating a dangerous feedback loop: as ice retreats, it leaves behind unstable debris and expanded glacial lakes prone to sudden outbursts. This environmental shift is moving the region toward a pattern of cascading, interconnected disasters that are harder to predict. With snow-cover days in southern Xizang declining by over 12 days per decade since 1981, the intensified meltwater is further accelerating slope erosion. Researchers are now calling for an integrated observation network using satellite and ground-based sensors to track these evolving threats across the fragile Himalayan landscape.
