Berea College Eliminates All Student Costs Starting Fall 2027

Starting in the fall of 2027, Berea College will move beyond tuition-free status to cover 100% of housing, food, and fees for every enrolled student. The initiative, dubbed the Financial Freedom Pledge, marks a significant shift in higher education financing by removing the burden of student loans entirely.

The Kentucky-based institution, which has not charged tuition since 1892, is positioning itself as the first college in the United States to provide a comprehensive, no-loan degree exclusively to students with limited financial resources. President Cheryl L. Nixon described the move as a commitment to investing in student potential rather than focusing on term bills, noting that the program represents an estimated value of more than $285,000 per student over four years.

Beyond direct educational costs, the college continues to support its students through a mandatory work program, free laptops, and funded internships. By removing financial barriers, the administration aims to grant students the autonomy to pursue academic interests and career paths without the looming pressure of debt. As Senior Associate Vice President Luke Hodson put it, the goal is to shift the focus from traditional financial aid to absolute financial freedom, allowing graduates to prioritize service and professional growth.
