The procedure at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital signals a rare expansion of high-tech surgical options for children with congenital heart conditions.

The operation, which corrected an atrial septal defect, utilized robotic instruments to translate a surgeon’s hand movements into precise, minimally invasive motions within the chest. This approach eliminates the need for a traditional sternotomy, offering patients the potential for smaller incisions, reduced postoperative discomfort, and a faster recovery time. While common in adult medicine, such procedures remain limited to a handful of specialized centers nationally due to the significant technical expertise and multidisciplinary coordination required.

Dr. David Kalfa led the surgical team in collaboration with specialists from the Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute and Florida International University. By integrating expertise from both pediatric and adult cardiac surgery, the group aims to establish a new standard for complex heart care in South Florida. The successful outcome serves as a proof of concept for local healthcare providers, demonstrating how institutional partnerships can bridge the gap between advanced research and clinical application for young patients.
