Alabama Water Utilities Completes $25 Million Infrastructure Expansion

The capital program focused on the US-280 corridor, where the Shelby Ridge Water Reclamation Facility underwent a $10.5 million expansion. This project successfully doubled daily treatment capacity to 2 million gallons. According to AWU President Guy Locker, the company achieved this at roughly $10 per gallon of added capacity—a significant reduction compared to the industry standard of $40 to $50.

At the North Shelby Water Resource Recovery Facility, a $10 million investment introduced AquaDisc effluent filters to supplement existing sand filtration. This upgrade resolved previous capacity bottlenecks and added operational redundancy. Meanwhile, the Morris Water Reclamation Facility was relocated and modernized, increasing its daily treatment capacity fivefold to 200,000 gallons. These improvements were designed with a ten-year growth horizon, prioritizing proactive capacity development to ensure long-term service reliability.
